April 2002: The Black Forest and Bavaria
We spent Friday driving from Riquewihr to Lindau, a medieval town on the Bodensee (Lake Constance). Along the way, we passed through the Black Forest and the Schwabian Albs. This photo was taken about halfway up Mount Belghen. Stuart enjoyed driving our 5-speed Renault on the wonderful German roads.

There were lots of places to stop and enjoy the views. At this point, we are on the northwestern side of the Bodensee. There were vinyards running from the roadside to the lakeshore. We took this one using the camera's timer feature and a conveniently placed rock. |
We arrived in Lindau in the late afternoon and headed for the walled city. To our great surprise, we had happened upon an unidentifed but much-loved view from the guidebook.
(And yes, those ARE the Alps.)

Did I mention we could see the Alps? That's them, in the background. In Austria. Below, we see a photo taken from the top of the lighthouse in the harbor.

| On Saturday, we left Lindau bright and early to make our way to Schloss Neuschwanstein. Built by King Ludwig II (a.k.a. Mad King Ludwig) in the late 1800s, it is a modern castle with all the amenities: running hot and cold water, flush toilets, and an electric buzzer system for the "help." It was also the inspiration for Cinderella's castle at DisneyLand. |

As you can see above, bad weather was threatening. By the time we came out of the castle, it had finally let loose--SNOW! |
