April 2002: Munich, Germany

On Saturday afternoon, we arrived in Munich. It took us a little while to find our hotel, but it turned out to be conveniently located across the street from the Central Station and just a few blocks from the old city. Lions were a symbol of Bavaria, and we saw them everywhere. This one was at Schloss [Castle] Nymphenburg.

We also had access to giant, soft pretzels, so there was no need for dinner that night.
On Sunday, we visited Dachau--that's a subject for another day.
After returning to Munich, we decided to spend the afternoon in the Englischer Garden. It is a lovely Central-Park-without-the-fear kind of place with lots of places to walk, ride a bike, romp with your dog, and drink beer. That's right--drink beer. We were in the mood for beer, so we stopped by the Chinese Pavillion and the Seehaus to sample the local flavors.
On Monday, we toured the old city. On the right, you see me standing in front of St Mary's Column by the Neues Rathaus [New Town Hall]--the ornate building to my left. The dome-topped towers of the Frauenkirche are visible in the background.
Michaelskirche [St. Michael's Church] was built for the Jesuits in the 16th century. Ludwig II is buried there.
The Hofbrauhaus is a famous Munich landmark, so we had to stop by for a beer--and to hear the oom-pa band.

Next: Amsterdam, Netherlands
