April 2002: Munich, Germany
On Saturday afternoon, we arrived in Munich. It took us a little while to find our hotel, but it turned out to be conveniently located across the street from the Central Station and just a few blocks from the old city. Lions were a symbol of Bavaria, and we saw them everywhere. This one was at Schloss [Castle] Nymphenburg.

We also had access to giant, soft pretzels, so there was no need for dinner that night. |
On Sunday, we visited Dachau--that's a subject for another day. After returning to Munich, we decided to spend the afternoon in the Englischer Garden. It is a lovely Central-Park-without-the-fear kind of place with lots of places to walk, ride a bike, romp with your dog, and drink beer. That's right--drink beer. We were in the mood for beer, so we stopped by the Chinese Pavillion and the Seehaus to sample the local flavors.

| On Monday, we toured the old city. On the right, you see me standing in front of St Mary's Column by the Neues Rathaus [New Town Hall]--the ornate building to my left. The dome-topped towers of the Frauenkirche are visible in the background. |

Michaelskirche [St. Michael's Church] was built for the Jesuits in the 16th century. Ludwig II is buried there.
|
| The Hofbrauhaus is a famous Munich landmark, so we had to stop by for a beer--and to hear the oom-pa band. |
