April 2002: France: Sites Outside of Paris

I have wanted to see Mont-Ste.-Michel since I was a kid, so I wasn't about to make a trip to France that didn't include it. On Monday, we took a bus tour that wound its way through Normandy to the coast for this fabulous site. In this photo, we are just about to get onto the causeway.
Here we are on the "mont." Stuart snapped the photo on the left as we climbed the road to the abbey. The photo below was taken as I stood inside one of the kitchen fireplaces in the Guest Hall.

It was quite foggy when we arrived at Versailles on Tuesday morning. We snapped a couple of non-flash photos in the famous Hall of Mirrors, which overlooks the gardens.
By the time we finished our tour, the fog had begun to lift. We strolled around the gardens near the chateau for an hour or so. To the left, Stuart is pictured with one of 12 neo-classical statues on the Royal Avenue. In the photo below, I am standing in a created grove known today as "The Baths of Apollo."

On Wednesday, we took the train from Paris to Strasbourg and picked up a car. We then drove to the medieval walled town of Riquewihr in Alsace. We spent Thursday visiting vinyards and wine cellars. Just outside of Riquewihr's walls stood Dopff au Moulin, with a great selection of wines and a lovely, fragrant wisteria vine out front.
