April 2002: Paris, France
We arrived in Paris on the morning of April 13, 2002. Our first order of business: a tour from the Seine on the Bateau Mouche. Here you see what turned out to be our best photo with the Eiffel Tower from the whole trip. After getting an overview of the many sites, we headed to the Louvre.
This is the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, built to celebrate Napoleon's victories in 1805. It stands in the courtyard of the Louvre, on the end that opens to the Jardins de Tuileries.

Stuart and I particularly enjoy sculpture. To the left, you see a statue of Jean d'Arc. It is clearly a represenation of her propensity for "hearing voices" in her days as a shepherdess. Above, Stuart poses in front of a statue of Mercury. Below, Stuart poses with Hamurabi's Code, the first recorded code of law. (Read a translation of Hamurabi's Code, then cast thyself into a river...Just kidding.)

After leaving the Louvre, we walked through the Jardins de Tuileries. The gardens are full of beautiful flower beds and sculpture. At the other end, you arrive at the Place de la Concorde, famous for its obelisk and these tremendous fountains.

Next: Notre Dame and Sainte-Chapelle
Next: The Black Forest and Bavaria
